Microsoft Ignite 2025 is the annual conference for IT professionals, developers, and partners to explore the latest advancements in cloud computing, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and enterprise solutions. This video of the opening keynote explores how large enterprises are utilizing the Microsoft platform and tools to revolutionize industry.
AI Can Transform Small and Mid-Sized Businesses
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept reserved for tech giants. At Microsoft Ignite 2025, the keynote made one thing clear: AI is here to help businesses of all sizes work smarter, faster, and more profitably. Microsoft is building tools to make AI accessible, practical, and impactful for everyday business operations.
Artificial Intelligence is NOT One Thing
We may not recognize all the ways we use Artificial Intelligence in our day to day work. Every time we ask Siri a question, you can use generative AI powered by Chat GPT. There are many levels of AI from Education to Agent.
Artificial Intelligence is Part of Everyday Work
One of the biggest themes from Ignite was that AI isn’t just an add-on; it’s becoming part of the way we work. Copilot for Microsoft 365 acts like a smart assistant inside familiar apps like Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams. Imagine drafting a proposal in Word and having Copilot suggest improvements, or analyzing sales trends in Excel without spending hours on formulas. These tools are designed to save time and reduce complexity so your team can focus on what matters most; serving customers and growing your business. The idea is to spend less time on manual work and fewer repetitive tasks. Instead of spending hours preparing reports or scheduling meetings, Copilot can handle those tasks in seconds.
At Ignite, Microsoft unveiled Agent 365, a new platform that lets businesses create and manage AI agents. Think of these agents as digital team members who can take on routine tasks, like processing invoices, updating customer records, or even managing parts of your supply chain. Unlike traditional automation tools, these agents can learn and adapt, making them more useful over time. Microsoft is assembling a catalog of Agents to mitigate the effort and risk of technical development.
Another exciting announcement was Work IQ, an intelligence layer that helps AI understand your business context. In simple terms, Work IQ connects to your company’s data including emails, files, meetings. With some configuration Work IQ learns how your team works. This allows AI tools like Copilot to provide more relevant suggestions and insights.
Understanding and Utilizing the Microsoft "Stack"
As with most Microsoft solutions, Artificial Intelligence utilizes a whole stack of tools. Another tool introduced during Ignite was Fabric IQ. Fabric IQ is a system that brings together different types of data such as sales numbers, inventory levels, and customer feedback into one connected view. Theoretically, this means you can see what’s happening in your business in real time and act quickly.
As someone who understands the concepts and has taken courses in Copilot Studio and other components of the Microsoft Suite of AI products, I know that the technology is more complex than most small businesses can handle on their own. However, for larger companies or with the right partner, these tools could spot a drop in sales before it becomes a problem. Alternatively, AI can identify and proactively report which products are driving the most profit.
Putting Artificial Intelligence to Work for YOU!
All small to mid-sized business owners need to think about or start putting AI to work in their companies. Microsoft made it abundantly clear that technology is here today and there are many reasons to use it.
- Efficiency: AI reduces manual work, so your team can focus on growth.
- Cost Savings: Automating routine tasks means fewer errors and lower operational costs.
- Better Customer Experience: AI helps you respond faster and personalize interactions.
- Competitive Advantage: Businesses that adopt AI early will have an edge over those that don’t.
Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft Commercial Business unit did a great job of explaining how companies succeed with AI and why many companies have fallen short of expectations.
Unmet AI Expectations
Four reasons were cited for unmet expectations:
- Business leaders and technology professionals did not align projects to business outcomes.
- Data quality issues. The old adage of garbage in, garbage out!
- Governance, regulatory and other requirements bogged down or stopped projects.
- An overemphasis on experimentation versus execution towards business objectives.
AI projects must be structured and planned like any other project with clear goals and objectives.
At I-BN, our four phase AI Methodology begins with clear objectives, ensures proper process definition, a clear understanding of when a human needs to be “in the loop” (HIL), required training and testing.
Frontier Success Framework
Judson Althoff also discussed four attributes for success in the AI Frontier.
- Enrich the employee experience
- Reinvent customer engagement
- Reshape business processes
- Bend the curve of innovation
The Frontier Framework also aligns with our continuous improvement framework. The customer experience grounds every project, and is surrounded by employees, business processes, the AI technology along with the need for quality data.
Ignite included several sessions on the Frontier Success Framework including “Powering Frontier Partnerships.” Microsoft has recognized its need to partner with Open AI, Anthropic, Nvidia and others. Accordingly, Microsoft promotes partnerships to extend the adoption of Artificial Intelligence to small and midsized organizations.
AI concepts and tools are wildly different than traditional development. A whole new vocabulary and skill set is required to build and tailor the AI agents to meet business outcomes. The Microsoft “stack” is multi-layered and complex. Therefore, partnering is essential to success in the SMB market.
The Bottom Line
The Microsoft Ignite keynote wasn’t just about technology; it was about outcomes. For SMB owners, AI offers a clear path to improved productivity, smarter decision-making, and sustainable growth. Whether it’s drafting documents, analyzing data, or automating workflows, Artificial Intelligence can help you do more with less. The future of business isn’t about replacing people with machines, it’s about empowering people with intelligent tools.
We are past the time of playing with Artificial Intelligence. To get a real return on AI, you must plan your projects to achieve tangible business outcome. Although most small businesses can not build it on their own, hope is not lost. A partner can help you find the right platform, with prebuilt components and personalization tools for your company, in your industry, with your objectives.
