AI-Powered Automations: What I Learned and Why It Matters

I just completed a course on AI-Powered Automations. I have been doing RPA (Robotic Process Automation) for most of my career. Did I really need another class? Yes, I did. The technologies and available tools have changed a lot.

AI might be the shiny new toy in the business world, but let’s not forget: automating a bad process is still a bad idea. This course gave me a chance to pause, evaluate, and reframe how I think about integrating AI into real business workflows.

Top Takeaways from AI-Powered Automation Course.

Here are my biggest takeaways.

🛠️ New Tech, Same Methodology

Here’s the thing: introducing AI into your automation toolbox doesn’t mean you get to skip steps.

You still need to:

  • Identify what’s broken or inefficient
  • Get input from users
  • Design and test a thoughtful solution
  • Monitor and refine

Slapping AI onto a bad process doesn’t fix the process. It just turbo-charges a bad result. So yeah, AI’s cool, but fundamentals still matter.

🤖 AI Isn’t Magic (But It’s Close)

AI can do some seriously impressive stuff—summarizing data, drafting content, analyzing patterns—but it’s not a set-it-and-forget-it solution. You need to:

  • Recognize where human judgment is still required
  • Build in checkpoints for review
  • Keep monitoring for drift or unintended consequences

AI can streamline decisions, but it’s not a substitute for accountability. If you don’t have someone steering the ship, don’t be surprised when it hits an iceberg.

🤝 Automation Is a Team Sport

Here’s one that too many people ignore: AI-powered automation isn’t just for IT.

Functional users are the ones who understand the workflows. They know the pain points. If you don’t bring them into the conversation, your solution will be ignored, actively resented, or worse.

At the same time, IT needs to stay involved—especially when it comes to data privacy, security, and system integration. Bottom line? No more silos.

🌱 Start Small, Scale Smart

Want to build trust in new technology? Start with something low-risk:

  • Automate repetitive internal reports
  • Route simple support tickets
  • Summarize meeting notes

Quick wins show value and build momentum. Then you can move on to the more complex stuff—where the real ROI lives.

🧰 Tools, Tools, and More Tools

There are so many AI tools out there, and trying to master them all will leave no time to really use them.

During this course, I deepened my knowledge of:

  • OpenAI (ChatGPT) – for summarization, generation, and decision support
  • n8n & Make.com – for building workflows and connecting APIs
  • Julius.ai & NotebookLM – for data analysis and research
  • Loom, Gamma, Miro – for documentation, storytelling, and collaboration

The key is to learn just enough to evaluate the right tool for the job. You don’t need to be a master of everything, just fluent in how they fit together.

🎯 Final Thoughts

AI isn’t a shortcut to doing less thinking, it’s a tool that lets you focus on higher-value thinking. But only if you implement it with intention.

If you’re exploring AI-powered automation for your team or business, start small, get the right people involved, and don’t expect perfection on day one. This stuff evolves fast, but the value adds up when you stay focused.
